Do you feel like you have to become someone else depending on who you’re around? Maybe you are one way around your friends at school, another way with your friends from church and another way with your family….. isn’t it exhausting!?

There is a LOT of talk about worthiness out there

There is a LOT of talk about worthiness out there on the internet. A lot of it is wonderful. But MOST of it tells us to find our worth “within” which sounds great until you realize that most people have a pretty strong inner critic within. The truth is that if our worthiness comes from others we are likely to be left feeling worthless and if our worthiness comes from within, we have the same problem.

Especially if worthiness is placed in things as fluid as otter appearance, status, people opinions, and our achievements.

Are you chasing “perfection” and if so, have you clearly defined for yourself what it is that you are pursuing? Is this pursuit reasonable? Is it healthy? Is it attainable? Where did your idea of perfection come from?

Many of us live with a nagging inner dialogue informing us that we are not measuring up, yet we don’t know what we are measuring against. It just feels LESS THAN.

And because we aren’t reaching our self imposed bar, we tell ourselves that we are failing. Not that we are a work in progress, not that we have strengths, and not that GOD ALONE is perfection, but that because we are not perfect, we are worthless. Do you find yourself falling into this cycle? A cycle that says you must be everything or you are nothing? You are not alone.

Things to remember:
0.At the end of the day, perfection is not attainable and we know this but easily forget. Our bar is ALWAYS moving and once we reach one goal, we immediately desire something more, and something “better.”
0.Perfection is not necessary. We can accomplish amazing things in the midst of struggle, experience joy in seasons of hardship, and be proud of things that will never make headlines. We can impact the world one person at a time, and our body might never make the front page of sports illustrated, but it will faithfully carry us through all of your days.

As you set your resolutions, be aware of goals that are made out of fear, anger, revenge, jealousy, etc. It is GOOD to have goals,
And to desire change, but it is also good to have these goals be reasonable, healthy and attainable without harm to yourself or others. It is okay if your goals happen over MANY YEARS. The road to success also includes many hills and valleys..

There just seems to be a hype for new years that it will “change everything” and tomorrow we will all wake up the same. Yet we will continue to grow slowly and engage in what God has for us.

Our coping mechanisms don’t just “happen” for no reason. They are behaviors/tools that we have learned to use over time because in some ways, they work. EVEN IF THEY ARE UNHEALTHY. But just because they provide some level of relief or comfort, it does not mean that they are productive or genuinely helpful.

Because many of these behaviors become habitual over time, it can be challenging to identify what is really underneath them, and as I work with teen girls these 3 things tend to be helpful as we do therapy.

👀PAY ATTENTION to what triggers your impulse to engage with the unhealthy coping mechanism.
.
.
.
🚨NOTICE what is happening in your body and with your emotions that tends to draw you toward the behavior. In other words, what are you trying to escape, numb or bandaid.
.
.
.
🤝ENGAGE non-judgmentally with the underlying need that you have in that moment and start identifying the healthier ways to have these needs met. If we constantly cover up the problems we face, we will never find genuine healing.
